By late 1981 circumstances pushed Joe and Larry to stop performing as the duo called Kinfolk. Joe was getting serious with a girl friend, and Larry had moved from Dallas to Arlington to live with a girl he had met while playing at the Melrose Hotel. Needing a new musical direction, Larry moved back to Alabama where he met popular area country singer Wayne Jeffreys. Larry and Wayne quickly established a friendship, and Larry began playing engagements with Wayne as rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist at small clubs in Alabama and Tennessee. Nearby Decatur Alabama in Morgan County, close to Wayne and Larry's home towns, legalized alcohol sales, and Wayne formed the Southern Knights band to capitalize on the new potential source of income. The original group consisted of Wayne and his brother, Kelvis, and Larry and his brother, Lynn. Although only together for a few months, the band became very popular and was one of the first bands to play in the Decatur area after it became wet.
